BMW M Division

In the year 2008 the BMW M GmbH celebrated its 30th year as well as its 300,000th vehicle. The 300,000th vehicle made by the BMW M Division was an M3 Coupe in alpine white.

BMW M GmbH was established in 1972 and six years later it presented its very first mid-engine racing car with the M badge.. The car was raced in the newly founded ProCar series but it was also sold in a road legal version as well. The BMW M1 was proudly the fastest German series production car at the time that it was built. The M1 was produced up to 1981 and a total of 445 units were sold. Today the BMW M3 models account for the largest proportion of all automobile sales for BMW M GmbH. The United States has become the most important market for the high performance BMW M cars.

At its launch in May 1972 the company had begun with just a total of eight employees. With its quick success the company had expanded to a total of 400 employees by the year 1988. The very first project that this brand new company undertook was that of the 3.0 CSL. This first project was important in establishing a reputation for BMW as a premier racing team.
